What to see in Barcelona in one day and in three, what the Sagrada Família and Park Güell cost, and how to use the metro. Checked in 2026.

You can see Barcelona in one day, but only if you buy your tickets before you leave home. The Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Gaudí's houses on Passeig de Gràcia sell timed tickets. Without a ticket bought in advance, Park Güell, for example, does not guarantee you entry.

Here is a plan for one day, what to add for three days, prices for tickets and public transport, and tips on which area to stay in. We checked prices, opening hours and rules on the official websites of the sights, the city and the transport company in September 2026. Some links in this article are affiliate links. What can you see in Barcelona in one day?

For one day, combine Gaudí with the old town. Take the metro between the stops.

  • The Sagrada Família in the morning, ideally the first entry after opening.
  • Metro to Passeig de Gràcia: Casa Batlló and, a few blocks further, La Pedrera. The fronts are enough. Go inside if you have more days.
  • Lunch at the Boqueria market on La Rambla.
  • In the afternoon, the Gothic Quarter and Barcelona Cathedral with its roof terrace.
  • At the end of the day, walk to Barceloneta beach and have dinner in the harbour district.
Flights

There is a reason for this order. In its itinerary Barcelona in 72 hours (Turisme de Barcelona, 2026), the city tourist board suggests the Sagrada Família between 9 and 10 in the morning, when it is quieter. In the afternoon the crowds are more on La Rambla and by the sea.

How do you buy a ticket for the Sagrada Família?

Online and in advance. According to the basilica FAQ (Sagrada Família, 2026), tickets go on sale about two months before the visit. On site you can only buy a ticket through the QR codes around the basilica, and only if there are places left. Do not count on that in summer.

A standard ticket with the app audio guide costs €26, and €36 with the towers, says the basilica price list (Sagrada Família, 2026). Children under 11 go in free. For a family with two young children, this means only the adults pay.

From April to September the basilica is open on weekdays from 9:00 to 20:00, on Saturday until 18:00 and on Sunday from 10:30. From November to February it closes at 18:00. Skirts and shorts must reach at least mid-thigh, and you cannot go in wearing see-through clothes or swimwear.

Building work started in 1882, and a year later Antoni Gaudí took over. He worked on it until his death in 1926, says the history of the temple (Sagrada Família, 2026). His successors still lead the work today, which is why you see cranes in the photos.

How does entry to Park Güell work?

Buy a ticket in advance for a set time. According to the park FAQ (Park Güell, 2026), entry is not guaranteed without a ticket bought in advance. They let in 1,400 people an hour, and the park covers 12 hectares.

Entry costs €18. Children aged 7 to 12 and over-65s pay €13.50, and children under 6 go in free, says the park price list (Park Güell, 2026). You must go in within 30 minutes of the time on your ticket. You can stay inside as long as you like, but once you leave, you cannot go back in. So use the toilets and buy water inside.

The park is on a hill above the city. The park management does not recommend Vallcarca metro station on line L3. It recommends the entrances on Carretera del Carmel and Carrer de Larrard.

Casa Batlló or La Pedrera?

If you only have time for one house and you have children, choose Casa Batlló. Under-12s go in free, and the house is open every day from 9:00 to 22:30, according to the ticket page (Casa Batlló, 2026). The standard visit costs from €29, and according to the house you save up to €15 per person if you buy in advance.

La Pedrera is known for its roof with chimneys. The Essential ticket costs €29, the evening Sunset ticket €25, and children under 11 go in free, says the ticket page (La Pedrera, 2026). The house has been on the UNESCO list since 1984. Both houses are on the same avenue, so you can see both fronts in a ten-minute walk.

What can you see in the Gothic Quarter?

The Gothic Quarter is the oldest part of the city, and it is best to walk around it without a map. Barcelona Cathedral is at its centre. According to the cathedral ticket page (Turisme de Barcelona, 2026), it was built from the 13th to the 15th century. It has a 70 m high neo-Gothic front, and 13 geese live in the cloister.

The €16 ticket includes the choir, the roof terrace and the chapter house. The cathedral is open on weekdays from 9:30 to 18:30, on Saturday until 17:15 and on Sunday only from 14:00 to 17:00. So as a visitor you cannot get into the cathedral on a Sunday morning.

From the cathedral, walk to Plaça Reial, where the lamps were designed by Gaudí, and then on to La Rambla.

When should you go to La Rambla and the Boqueria?

On a weekday morning. The Boqueria market has been open since 1840. It opens Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 20:30 and is closed on Sunday, says the market page (Turisme de Barcelona, 2026). So do not leave your shopping for Sunday.

La Rambla and the market are crowded during the day. Keep your bag in front of you. There is more on this in the next section.

How do you protect yourself from pickpockets?

The city of Barcelona has its own advice for visitors. According to the safety page (Ajuntament de Barcelona, 2026), this is what to do:

  • Do not let your luggage or bags out of your sight, especially in station and hotel halls.
  • Carry documents, money and cards in inside pockets or pockets that close.
  • On the metro and at stops, keep your bag closed and in front of you.
  • On the beach and on café terraces, do not leave your things alone.
  • Do not trust anyone in the street who tells you there is a problem with your car.

What should you add if you have three days?

Day two is for Montjuïc. On the hill stand the National Palace from 1929, with the National Art Museum of Catalonia, and the Olympic site from the 1992 Games. A 750 m cable car with three stops goes up to the castle at the top, according to the cable car page (Turisme de Barcelona, 2026).

In the evening, stay for the Font Màgica fountain. Carles Buïgas built it in 1929, and watching it is free. The nearest metro station is Espanya on lines L1 and L3, says the fountain page (Turisme de Barcelona, 2026). The fountain only plays on some evenings, so check the schedule on the day.

On the morning of day three, Park Güell. In the afternoon, go inside Casa Batlló or La Pedrera, and in the evening the beach.

It also includes one metro ride from the airport and one back, says the card page (Hola Barcelona, 2026). It does not cover the cable car on Montjuïc. If you arrive in the morning and fly home on the evening of day three, buy the 72-hour card.

Where should you stay in Barcelona?

Choose your area by what you want to do in the evening.

  • Eixample: straight streets near Passeig de Gràcia, close to Gaudí's houses and the metro. Best for a first visit.
  • Gràcia: smaller squares and local bars, close to Park Güell.
  • The Gothic Quarter and El Born: you can walk everywhere, but it is louder at night.
  • Barceloneta: the beach outside your window, further from the Sagrada Família.
  • Poble-sec: below Montjuïc, quieter and close to the fountain.

When you compare hotels, check the distance to the nearest metro station. Five minutes' walk to the metro saves you a taxi in the morning and in the evening.

How do you get to Barcelona from the UK?

By plane. In the flight search, compare airports and dates, and check if a flight is direct or has a change.

From the airport to the centre, the metro has stations at terminals T1 and T2. The Airport ticket costs €5.90, and with the Hola Barcelona card the ride is included.

When is the best time for Barceloneta beach?

Barceloneta is a city beach for the early evening after the sights.
